Antenatal care options
The following antenatal care options are available:
- Antenatal care by midwives in the Antenatal Clinic, with a GP Obstetrician appointment in the hospital at 28 weeks
- Antenatal care provided by nominated accredited GP Obstetricians, as a public or private patient
- Shared care model with a community-based GP Obstetrician or Privately Practising Endorsed Midwife
Pregnant women identified with high-risk factors will be seen by a consultant obstetrician.
Boodjari Yorgas Midwifery Group Practice
The Boodjari Yorgas Midwifery Group Practice is an award-winning, midwife-led service dedicated to supporting Aboriginal women throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postnatal journey. The programs designed to empower women by providing culturally safe, respectful, and holistic care that honours their traditions and values.
This approach has led to significant improvements in maternal and newborn outcomes, including a reduction in unbooked births at the hospital and lowered birth-related risks.
Midwifery Antenatal and Postnatal Service
Our MAPS (Maternity Antenatal Postnatal Service) model offers personalised care from the same midwife or small team throughout your pregnancy and after birth. This continuity helps build trust and ensures your care is tailored to your needs and culture. Women in MAPS often experience better health outcomes, shorter hospital stays and feel more confident and supported during their journey into motherhood.
Midwifery Antenatal and Postnatal Service (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus)
Women diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) can now receive care closer to home through the MAPS GDM service at Armadale Health Service. This new model enhances continuity of care and offers improved outcomes by allowing women to give birth locally, including those women who commence insulin, supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team.
Next Birth after Caesarean clinic (NBAC)
Our maternity unit supports women to birth naturally where possible. Our Next Birth after Caesarean Clinic (NBAC) provides information and support to pregnant women regarding their birth choices following a previous caesarean section.
Our specialised team of midwives and obstetricians will discuss with you the chance of a successful vaginal birth, your personal wishes and future fertility plans to allow you to make an informed decision.
Early Pregnancy Assessment Service Clinic
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS) at Armadale Health Service provides specialised, confidential, and caring support to those families experiencing issues during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. Run by a Specialist Obstetrician and Midwife, the clinic runs two half days per week and provides assessment, treatment, and emotional support services.
Providing the patient does not require immediate treatment, please send ‘EPAS Clinic’ referrals via the Central Referral Service (CRS) by fax 1300 365 056.
Unwell patients (for example those who are hemodynamically unstable or experiencing severe pain and/or heavy bleeding) should be referred directly to Armadale Health Service Emergency Department. Once stable these patients will be internally referred to the EPAS Clinic for ongoing assessment, treatment, and support.
Antenatal Education Classes
We offer antenatal education classes for expectant mothers and their support persons to help prepare for the arrival of a new baby. These sessions provide valuable information to support informed choices around pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. Topics include healthy lifestyle habits, physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, labour and birth options, pain relief, unexpected outcomes, newborn care, infant feeding, parenting styles, and the role of the support person. A tour of the maternity ward is also included to help you feel confident and ready for your journey into parenthood.
It is recommended to commence classes between 28 & 32 weeks of pregnancy, there is the option to attend in person or online for these classes, please discuss with the parent educator.
How are classes booked?
Women who attend the antenatal clinic for their booking visit will be offered and booked into these antenatal education classes which are held in the antenatal clinic.

Pregnancy support
Health direct Australia has launched the expanded Pregnancy, Birth and Baby service (external site) to support parents on their journey from pregnancy through to preschool.
The Pregnancy, Birth and Baby website offers a range of information on topics such as pregnancy planning, having a healthy pregnancy, newborn essentials, toddler tips and preschool preparation. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby can also refer to local face-to-face health services relevant to your needs, such as early child health or speech therapy.

Breastfeeding support at Armadale Hospital
Armadale Hospital proudly offers a 7-day-a-week lactation service, supporting women throughout their breastfeeding journey. Our International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) provide expert care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Support is available in person at our outpatient clinic or via telehealth, making it easier for families to access the help they need.
If you’ve experienced breastfeeding challenges in the past, you can also see a lactation consultant during pregnancy to help prepare for a more positive experience this time around.

Newborn Hearing Screening
The WA Newborn Hearing Screening Program provides a free hearing screen for all newborn babies at public, private, metropolitan, and regional maternity services across Western Australia.
Here at Armadale Hospital, screening maybe undertaken any time after your baby’s birth, usually before you leave the hospital.
If your baby misses the hearing screen in hospital an outpatient appointment will be arranged. If this does not happen, please contact the Newborn Hearing team on 0417 182 158.
Visiting Midwifery Service (VMS) – Care at Home for You and Your Baby
The Visiting Midwifery Service is available to most women living within the Armadale catchment area and operates seven days a week, including public holidays.
After your baby is born, a midwife will visit you at home daily until your baby is seven days old. Following this, your care will continue with the community child health nurse.
Our midwives provide support, answer questions, and offer advice on caring for yourself and your baby.
Midwives visit between 08:00am and 4:00pm, so please keep that time free. We’re not able to give exact appointment times due to travel and scheduling.
