Admissions

It is sometimes hard to know what to expect when you are coming into hospital so we have put together some information about your admission.

When you arrive

The Same Day Unit, located on the first floor, is the admission point for all adult patients undergoing planned surgery and for some emergency patients.

Paediatric patients (under 16) undergoing surgery are admitted on the Children's Ward (Campbell Ward).

For patients admitted to hospital, each ward has between one and six beds, depending on the specialty. These are allocated to patients based on clinical need.

Maternity admissions

If you think you are in labour, please call the Antenatal Assessment Unit on 9391 2947 to speak with a midwife before coming to the hospital.

When you arrive at the hospital, proceed to the Maud Bellas maternity ward reception on the first floor. To access the maternity ward and birthing suites between 9pm and 5am, please present at the Emergency Department where staff will direct you to the ward.

Types of surgery admissions

Same day surgery

Patients who will be having surgery or a procedure and will be returning home on the same day. You must arrange for a responsible adult to pick you up and stay with you overnight. Note: Your surgery may be cancelled if this has not been arranged.

Day of surgery admission

This refers to patients who will be admitted on the day of their procedure and will stay overnight after their operation or procedure.

Day before surgery admission

This refers to patients who are admitted to a surgical ward one to two days prior to their surgery. This only occurs if you require treatment prior to your operation or procedure.

Emergency surgery admission

This refers to patients who are unwell and are admitted for surgery through the Emergency Department or at very short notice. After your operation you will either be moved to the Same Day Unit to recover or transferred to a surgical ward to stay overnight.

General preparation before surgery

Teh evening before surgery, shower using liquid soap and again prior to coming into hospital for your operation. Please do not apply any lotions, creams, powders or deodorant after showering. Remove all nail polish, make up and jewellery.

Same day patients – what to bring on the day of your surgery

• Medications, including hypoglycaemic medications or insulin if you take them
• Any x-rays or scans relating to your procedure
• Letter from your surgeon or anaesthetist if provided
• Slippers and dressing gown if possible

Overnight patients – what to bring on the day of your surgery

• A change of clothes
• Pyjamas or nightgown, dressing gown and slippers (non-slip sole) as it is important for footwear to be worn at all times
• Toiletry products such as soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb/brush, shaving kit and tissues
• Your medications, including hypoglycaemic medications or insulin if you take them
• Letter from your surgeon or anaesthetist if provided
• A small amount of money for newspapers, magazines, telephone calls and to hire a television.
• Any X-rays or scans relating to your procedure

Personal belongings

Please do not bring jewellery, other valuables or excess cash to hospital. The health service is not responsible or liable for any damage or loss related to such items.
