Nutrition and Dietetics

Armadale Health Service provides nutrition and dietetics services to inpatients and the community.

Inpatient services

Our dietitians provide diet and nutrition advice in the following inpatient areas:

  • rehabilitation and sub-acute care ward
  • renal dialysis unit
  • Emergency Department
  • general medical wards
  • general surgical wards
  • intensive care unit
  • mental health units.
  • Paediatric ward (excluding neonates)

The team also provides post-discharge follow up care (within 12 months) for Armadale Health Service patients only (excluding mental health patients and eating disorders who are referred to external services for follow up).

Accessing the service

Inpatients can be referred for dietetic services through a referral from allied health professionals, medical officers and nurses.

Outpatient services

Armadale Health Service offers nutrition and dietetics services for children and adults within the Armadale catchment area.

This includes the assessment of an individual’s nutritional needs, education and support required to assist people to manage their health and medical conditions.

Adults

Adults can be referred for:

  • type 1 diabetes (excluding insulin pump management)
  • type 2 diabetes with complications
  • poor appetite, weight loss, nutritional deficiency
  • allergies and food intolerances
  • gastrointestinal issues e.g. coeliac disease/stoma management, inflammatory bowel disease
  • prolonged wound healing
  • pancreatic, liver or kidney disease
  • chronic progressive diseases e.g. Parkinson’s disease

 

Referrals and appointments

General dietetic outpatient services are provided for post discharge follow up care only.

Referrals for outpatients requiring multidisciplinary care can be made to the Community Rehabilitation service and patients with diabetes to the Diabetes Education service. 

Paediatrics

Children can be referred via the Armadale Health Service paediatric specialist outpatient clinic for:

  • faltering growth
  • allergies or food intolerances
  • gastrointestinal issues
  • nutritional deficiencies.
