This past weekend marked a significant triumph for the Armadale Kalamunda Group (AKG), as Kalamunda Hospital’s Judy Brand emerged victorious at the WA Nursing & Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA).
Judy won the award in the 'Excellence in Leadership – Emerging Leader' category, a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions and leadership within the field of nursing.
"I felt overwhelmed, supported, amazed and very humbled to even be considered for this nomination,” Judy shared, recalling the moment her name was called out.
“I truly believe that all the nominees were winners, showcasing their various approaches to delivering exceptional nursing care and enhancing the patient experience within our health services."
Judy’s leadership style is characterised by flexibility, adapting to varying circumstances such as urgency or safety concerns.
"I always aim for transparency, clear communication and a visionary approach that inspires new ideas," she elaborated, adding that she empowers her team through coaching and continuous support, and by nurturing innovation and growth among her staff.
Looking ahead, Judy is eager to further develop her leadership capabilities and support her colleagues in identifying their strengths and goals.
“For me, in the future, I would like to focus on the importance of collaboration within our team to provide a high level of palliative care, emphasising the importance of early conversations to better understand patients' needs and align services with EMHS values,” she said.
AKG Director of Nursing and Midwifery (DONM) Helen Fullarton lauded Judy's achievement as a testament to AKG's leadership.
"Judy epitomises our values and has significantly contributed to our team's success," Helen beamed.
“I was so excited when her name was announced, especially as the DONM – having her wonderful work and leadership publicly awarded made me so proud.”
Kalamunda Hospital Coordinator of Nursing Jo Haris commended Judy's compassionate leadership and her advocacy for patients, families and staff.
"Her leadership style encourages all of us to strive for excellence," Jo expressed, reflecting the collective pride felt across Kalamunda for Judy's remarkable achievement.
“Her ability to inspire and motivate others is well recognised across many WA palliative care services.
“She truly is an absolute pleasure to work with, and we’re all so proud of her.”
