Celebrating midwives with Carli Beange

Today, 5 May 2022, is International Day of the Midwife. This significant day provides the chance to celebrate midwives and recognise the wonderful contribution they make to maternal and newborn health.

We caught up with Carli Beange, A/Midwifery Unit Manager, to learn a little more about her and the vital role midwives play at Armadale Kalamunda Group (AKG).

Carli has worked at AKG since 2015 and has the important role of leading the Midwifery Unit and helping the team deliver evidence-based care to the women and neonates that are admitted to the unit.

Carli knew when she young that she wanted to grow up to be a midwife.

“As a midwife, I find the greatest joy is in delivering midwifery continuity of care and being the ‘family midwife’ for many families in the area. Right now, I am also enjoying the challenges of learning management skills and being a leader,” Carli said.

“The scope of the midwife is broad, and it is a very fulfilling job. Being an advocate for women is the central philosophy no matter where you work.”

“It brings me great joy and also humbles me as I witness families being made and I wouldn’t want to work in any other profession.”

Carli’s passion for midwifery is obvious, but her love of AKG wouldn’t be possible without the amazing team surrounding her.

“The team at AKG is excellent. The whole team – midwives, doctors, clerical staff, and cleaners. Everybody brings kindness and respectful attitudes to work every day and it means women and their families benefit.”

AKG has an extensive team of midwives and nursing staff, who not only work hard to deliver babies and provide care to growing families, but also offer a wide range of services to support expecting mums throughout their entire pregnancy journey.

From Boodjari Yorgas Midwifery Group Practice, which provides culturally safe care to Aboriginal families, to the Midwifery Group Practice program which enables women to be seen by the same midwife throughout their pregnancy. Our midwives go the extra mile for our patients.

“Through the Midwifery Group Practice, I have been grateful to have attended multiple births for families. It brings me great joy that AKG can provide such fantastic services like these.”

Thinking about the future, Carli encourages all healthcare professionals – not just midwives – to grow with the needs of community.

“By adapting to new ways of delivering care we will be improving the care we provide at AKG. I’m glad to be a part of the team that is constantly responsive to the community’s needs.”
